Event Details

The Women’s Infrastructure Network (WIN) Wellington invites you to an exclusive site visit hosted by Holmes to 80 The Terrace, offering a rare opportunity to see cutting-edge seismic retrofit techniques in action. Join us on Tuesday 19 May at 12:00pm.

This landmark project represents the first comprehensive seismic retrofit of a 1980s multistorey reinforced concrete frame building with hollow-core floors, delivered using new guidance from the ReCast Floors research programme. The building comprises a 16-storey tower supported by a 4-storey split-level podium, presenting a complex and highly innovative strengthening challenge.

The retrofit works include the installation of supplemental damping devices to reduce building drifts and accelerations, targeted strengthening of hollow-core flooring systems, and the introduction of steel straps across the structure to complete diaphragm load paths and limit frame separation. Together, these interventions significantly enhance the building’s seismic resilience while working within the constraints of the existing structure.

This site visit offers a unique chance to gain insight into the application of emerging research in a real-world setting, and to hear directly from those involved in delivering this technically ambitious project.

PPE is required: Attendees must wear steel cap boots, a hi-vis vest or jacket, and a hard hat (no spare PPE will be available on site).
