Women's Infrastructure Network and The Infrastructure Collective Wellington are excited to invite you to join us for the WIN and TIC Wellington: Site Visit at Ngā Mokopuna (formerly the Living Pā), on Friday 5 June from 12:00pm.

Ngā Mokopuna is very different from typical institutional buildings. Opened on 6 December 2024, it is one of the world’s most environmentally responsible buildings, having been designed and built to meet the Living Building Challenge.

Ngā Mokopuna is the key feature of the Marae redevelopment at Te Herenga Waka-Victoria University. It replaces five villas on Kelburn Parade that sat in front of Te Tumu Herenga Waka, the first wharenui on university grounds in Aotearoa. The project vision for the Ngā Mokopuna sought to draw together mātauranga Māori and sustainability practices.

Ngā Mokopuna redevelopment is a new three-storey innovation hub at Te Herenga Waka Marae. As an extension of the marae, and joining the wharenui, Te Tumu Herenga Waka – the Ngā Mokopuna will be living lab for Māori studies.

Ngā Mokopuna structure is designed to be fully self-resilient from decentralised infrastructure, and meet the Living Building Challenge LBC, the most rigorous environmental building standard in the world.

To achieve LBC, Ngā Mokopuna must generate all its own energy, use its own water systems, be carbon-neutral and use non-toxic materials. Rainwater harvesting provides all water required on-site, all grey & black water is processed on site via the Membrane Bioreactor water treatment system, and all power will be solar generated.

WIN and TIC Wellington jointly invite you to attend a site visit hosted by LT McGuiness (lead contractor) to see the Ngā Mokopuna up close and personal and hear about the design and construction process undertaken, and how successful it is, 18 months after opening.
