Further to our previous expression of interest, WIN Southern are excited to invite you to a special site visit to the Manapōuri Power Station, New Zealand’s largest hydroelectric facility and one of the country's most significant engineering achievements, on Thursday 7 May from 9:00am - 2:30pm.
Located deep within Fiordland National Park, on the western arm of Lake Manapōuri, this remarkable power station is almost entirely underground, with its machine hall excavated 200 metres below the lake’s surface. The station was constructed between 1964 and 1972, and represents one of New Zealand’s most ambitious infrastructure projects, taking 1,800 workers eight years to complete in extremely challenging terrain.
Originally built to provide power to the Tiwai Point Aluminium Smelter near Bluff, the station remains a critical part of New Zealand’s electricity system and a milestone of environmental history.
There will be a cost associated with the travel by boat across Lake Manapōuri, depending on final numbers, this cost will be spread between those attending and could range between $30-$60 per person.
You will need to bring your lunch with you as there are no options to purchase food or drink once departing Manapōuri. Spaces are limited and capped to a maximum of 20 persons.
