This event will bring together representatives from local and regional government, the private sector, academia, and community leaders to explore collective responses to these challenges. Panellists to be announced.

Presenter Details

Stuart Woods - Lead Advisor - Resilience, NZTA

Stuart Woods is the NZ Transport Agency’s Resilience Programme Lead. He has had over 30 years’ experience working in local government, consultancy and at the Transport Agency. Much of his career has been focussed on transport planning, policy and strategy development. Stuart has been working on resilience of the transport system. Initial work included leading a business improvement programme for the state highways system, during which he developed and collated a range of tools and reference materials for addressing resilience issues. He has also led the development of the Transport Agency’s Resilience Framework and has contributed to a range of transport resilience policy conversations and provided advice to a range of projects and business planning.


Tom Simons-Smith - Principal Advisor - Coastal Adaptation, Christchurch City Council

Tom Simons-Smith is an adaptation professional with expertise in coastal science, strategic planning, and programme management. As Principal Advisor for Coastal Adaptation at Christchurch City Council, Tom leads the development and implementation of coastal adaptation planning processes. His work includes facilitating expert reference groups, advising on hazard and risk assessments, and championing nature-based solutions for hazard management. Previously, Tom served as Coastal Specialist at Dunedin City Council, where he led the award-winning Whakahekerau - Rakiātea Rautaki Tai St Clair - St Kilda Coastal Plan, and managed large-scale hazard screening and monitoring initiatives. His experience includes implementing physical works such as dune restoration and sea wall repairs, and designing nature-based interventions like foredune notching and sand trapping.


Stephen Douglass - Environment and Future Communities Lead, GHD

Stephen is GHDs Future Communities Regional Lead for NZ, Asia and the Pacific, and Lead for Environment and Planning in NZ and Fiji. Stephen has 20+ years of experience as an environmental scientist and undertaking technical assessments and consenting for major civil infrastructure projects in the transportation, 3-waters, hydroelectricity, industry and waste sectors. He has been led technical investigations for district and city councils, private developers, energy companies, and the central government.
